They say Texas Hold'Em Poker is a game of skill. Anyone who has been around the game long enough will tell you this. What other explanation is there for the fact that the same names seem to appear at final tables of premier poker tournaments around the world – the APPT, WSOP, WPT etc.
If Hold'Em was all about luck, odds are we'd have never heard of a Johnny Chan or Phil Helmuth. Poker pros gain a name for themselves via consistant success, and when you're playing in tournaments whose numbers range in the thousands – it can't be luck that sees these players through to the money almost every time.
Simarly, in a league of 400,000, surely a player who has taken out a Player of the Week title, Player of the Month title, almost $19,000 in APL winnings and currently leads the coveted Player of the Year leaderboard by over 2000 points has proven that he is, undoubtedly, a remarkably skilled and talented player.
NSW City Outer West Region's Aaron 'Jerry' Jenkyns is one such player – and as such, he's one of a kind. No player in the leagues history has ever accomplished so much in such a short period of time – and it doesn't look like he's about to slow down any time soon.
After placing 5th in APL's Player of the Month promotion for the month of July, Aaron picked up a tidy $1500 in cash for his efforts before being announced APL's Player of the Month for August 2008 – an accomplishment worth $10,000.
In the first week of September, Aaron took out Player of the Week to secure a second seat into the Wild Turkey Poker Classic to be contested at the world famous Crown Poker Room in Melbourne come February. From here, Jenkyns secured a 7th placing in both September and October's POTM promotion – winning himself a further $2000 cash.
November saw Aaron place 2nd in POTM behind our first Victorian Champion Bryan Mannix to clear an extra $4000 in cash!
Aaron, 24 started playing poker with the APL when he was 22 and quickly 'caught the bug'. His favourite hand is Ace Nine. "My name starts with A, and I was born on the 9th day of the 9th month".
Aaron plays at Five Dock RSL with his friends and girlfriend and after spending some of his winnings on a Bali holiday last month, he claims his APL earnings will "come in handy" until he takes out the lucrative $50,000 Full Tilt Sponsorship package that will be awarded to the APL's Player of the Year for 2008/9. Jerry currently leads the points chase on 9920 points from 220 games, ahead of Ivan Simunic (7850) & Allan Robinson (7680), both from 265 games.
Excited about the Poker Classic after bowing out early in the 2008 APL TOC, 'Jerry' claims that should he win the Classic, he will be heading straight to Vegas to get into the mix with the game's very best!
