MALABAR CARD SHARK WINS CAR PLAYING POKER WITH THE APL
The Australian Poker League's (APL) Player of the Week and Player of the Month promotions have taken off this year, with 20 tickets into the APL's premier event, the APL Tournament of Champions, $10,000 in cash and a brand new car given away over the past 11 weeks!
To become an APL player of the Month is no small feat – the winning player must triumph over more than 300,000 APL players seated every month and secure the best average score in the league. But the challenge doesn't stop there! After taking out the title of Player of the Month, you'll have to choose between four fantastic prizes including a brand new, 3 door 1.4L Hyundai Getz, a Las Vegas holiday, entry into the Aussie Millions Poker Tournament and accommodation at Melbourne's Crown Casino, or $10,000 in cold, hard cash!
The choice was easy for East Sydney's Natt Armstrong, who overcame the odds to take out the title of APL Player of the Month for April and was 'ecstatic' to hear he'd come out on top.
"There are so many people out there playing APL Poker, and they're all aware of these competitions, they're all aware of what is at stake and what is up for grabs. To rise above that is something I'm really proud of and something I have worked so hard to do – and hard work has never been so fun!"
The 22-year-old business student scored a convincing win to secure his choice of 'Stars, Cars, Cash and Casinos' and didn't hesitate when it came to making his decision.
"$10K is certainly tempting, but I'm going to have to take the car – and I'll take it in black!"
Hailing from Malabar, NSW, Natt plays three to four times a week and wishes he had more time amidst study time to take to the felt, although he admits that playing poker with the APL has added a new dimension to his social life.
"I've made a tonne of friends playing poker, they've helped me learn the game and I like to think I've passed a tip or two on myself"
Choosing to play his APL Poker at Coogee Bay Hotel and Churchill's Sports Bar in Sydney's South East, an excited but humble Natt made his way through the doors of Paramatta Hyundai on Tuesday to claim his prize, and explained his lingering disbelief at winning the monthly competition.
"I'm still having trouble believing it. It's hard to get your head around things like this... Now I'm here, now I see the car – now I believe it!"
Armstrong met with General Manager of the APL Jason Leong, who presented the young card shark with the keys to his brand new Hyundai Getz.
"It really is a fantastic feeling, to give away such an amazing prize to someone who is obviously so committed to the APL. This is our way of saying thanks and rewarding our players for their loyalty, and their achievements. Natt has beaten 300,000 players nationally to win himself this prize – no one deserves this more than him, and for that reason he is special to us."
Natt was delighted to be driving home in a brand new Hyundai after having already won himself entry into the APL's flagship event, the APL Tournament of Champions at an APL Regional Final earlier this year, where Natt will compete against almost 1000 opponents for a first prize minimum of $250,000.
In March the APL awarded its Player of the Month, Van Le a cheque for $10,000. APL will be awarding its next Player of the Month (May) later this week.
